Growing in Our Understanding of Forgiveness

October 22, 2009 | 2 Comments

One of the greatest ways in which the Gospel manifests itself in the life of a Christian is through their ability to offer forgiveness toward those who have offended them. However, it is my belief that many of us may have an understanding of forgiveness that is a bit too fast and loose and falls well short of what the Bible has to say about it.

In this post, Chris Brauns gives us some refreshing insight as to how we might truly forgive as we have been forgiven.

Thanks for the interesting post. Do you agree with his view that forgiveness is conditional? I have been counseled differently than this in the past on forgiveness, but I think his argument for "offering forgiveness" instead of "giving forgiveness" makes sense.

John,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I do believe that forgiveness is based on the condition of repentance from the offending party. We see an example of this is the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18. The servant was offered forgiveness from his mastered, but his inability to forgive his fellow servant for the much lesser debt demonstrates that he never really repented of his wrong toward his master.
